The Gospel of John for Youth
Commentary by Pastor Ron
John Chapter 14
(Words in red
in the Scriptures are the words of Jesus)
"Do not let
your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me."
Jesus had just told His disciples He was going to die and they were upset.
He had also said that Peter was going to betray Him three times in one
night! (John 13:38). But when things seem to go wrong, you can TRUST in
God the Father, and you can TRUST (believe) in God the Son. God will watch
out for you.
Verse 2. "In My
Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you."
Things are crowded in this world and they are getting more so. Where God
is, however, there is plenty of room. The reason Jesus would die is to
make a way for you and me to be with God. You will LOVE being with God,
now and in eternity.
Verse 3. "If I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also."
The disciples (students) were worried because Jesus was going away from
them. He may seem far away, but if you love Him, He is WITH you always.
Wherever He is, you are with Him, and there’s even more good news: He is
coming back again, and this time, He’s coming to bring you to Him. You
will be safe – forever.
"And you know
the way where I am going."
You already know how to get to God the Father. You already know how to
find heaven. In the next verse, Thomas, one of Jesus’ students, would say,
“No, we don’t, Lord!” But you and I DO know the way.
Verse 5. "Thomas said to Him, 'Lord, we do not know where You are going,
how do we know the way?'"
Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples (students) was upset. Jesus had just said
the disciples knew where He would be going, but Thomas said, “No, we
don’t, Lord! We don’t know where You’re going – how could we POSSIBLY know
Verse 6. "Jesus said to him,
'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.'"
This is one of the greatest verses in Scripture. Where is heaven and how
do we find it? What is the truth? When you are afraid, remember this:
Jesus is the way to God. He has told you the truth – He IS the truth. You
will always be OK when you trust in Him. And He, the truth, has told you
He is the only way to find God.
"If you had
known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him."
If you know Jesus, you know God the Father. He is God Himself, and to
trust in Jesus is to find God. Trust in the Son and you have the Father.
If you “see” Jesus with your heart, you have “seen” and touched the
Father. He is the way.
Verse 8. "Philip said to Him, 'Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough
Philip was another one of Jesus’ disciples (students). Jesus had just
said, “If you see Me, you’ve seen God the Father, and now Philip, who did
not understand, said, “Just show us the Father.” They had already seen Him
through Jesus for the past three years!
Verse 9. "Jesus said to him,
'Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not
come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father;
how can you say, 'Show us the Father?'"
Jesus had just spent three years with Philip, one of His disciples
(students). God the Father is REVEALED to us in Jesus Christ! When we read
His words, we have heard God! Just like Philip, we need to “see” with our
“hearts” by TRUSTING in Jesus Christ. In Him, we see God.
"Do you not
believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative,
but the Father abiding in Me does His works."
Jesus is answering Philip, one of His disciples (students), who wanted to
see God the Father. The Father is IN Jesus and Jesus is IN the Father. To
have One is to have them Both! Jesus went around doing “works” (healing
people) like nobody else ever could. Philip should have “seen” the Father
in the works Jesus did.
that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves."
Jesus, God the Son, and God the Father, are One. Not one person but One in
love, one in purpose – One. Jesus is saying, “If you don’t believe Me,
look at what I’ve been doing: Crippled people are walking, the blind see,
lepers are healed…” You need to BELIEVE in Jesus. And believing, you will
understand that He and the Father are One.
Verse 12. "Truly,
truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do;
because I go to the Father."
Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead. He did many miracles, and if we
BELIEVE in Him, we will find wonderful miracles in our lives, too. Jesus
went back to God the Father, and He is praying for us always, that we will
do even greater things for others than were done while He was on earth.
Verse 13. "Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father
may be glorified in the Son."
Jesus Christ ANSWERS the prayers of those who love Him. The answer can be
"not yet" sometimes, and other times the prayer needs to be in His will
(1st John 5:14) first, but He ALWAYS answers your prayers and mine.
"If you ask
Me anything in My name, I will do it."
There have been other names that people have used for prayer. Those
"names" eventually disappear, and we must pray in the Name of Jesus
Christ, the Son of God.
"If you love
Me, you will keep My commandments."
Jesus told us in John 13:34 what His commandments are: We're to love one
another. Do you love Jesus? If you do, you will be finding more and more
ways to help others and care for them.
"I will ask the Father, and He will give you another
Helper, that He may be with you forever;"
The disciples (students) of Jesus were afraid, because He had said He was
going to leave them. Do you sometimes feel alone? If you love Jesus,
you're never alone, because He has given you the "helper" (the Holy
Spirit) who is with you right now.
"that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot
receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He
abides with you and will be in you."
Life can be confusing, but the "Spirit of truth" (the Holy Spirit) will
help you. The "world" doesn't know Jesus or His Spirit. But if you love
Jesus, His Spirit is with you and is a part of you. Trust in the Lord and
don't be afraid.
Verse 18. "I will not
leave you as orphans; I will come to you."
Some in the world are orphans and others are not orphans but FEEL like
they are. Jesus wants you to know that He is with you. You are not alone
and you are a child of the King, His child. He loves you and will always
come to you when you need Him.
"After a little while the world will no longer see
Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also."
Jesus was saying that soon He would die. "The world" would not see Him
then, but His disciples (students) would see Him, because He would rise
from the dead. If we love Him, we already "see" Him with our "hearts".
Because we KNOW Jesus, we will always be alive, just like He is.
"In that day you will know that I am in My Father,
and you in Me, and I in you."
His disciples (students) would SEE Him, after He was risen from the dead.
Because of seeing Him ALIVE, they would finally BELIEVE in Him. They would
understand that Jesus is "in" God the Father, and we who believe in Him,
are "in" Him also. We are a part of Him - forever.
Verse 21. "He who has
My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him
and will disclose Myself to him."
The "commandments" of Jesus are shown in Matthew 22:37-39: We are to love
God and love other people. When we trust Jesus, He gives us His love and
helps us keep His commandments. When you have His love, the Father will
love you, and you will know more about Him.
Verse 22. "Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, 'Lord, what then has happened
that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?'"
People have a favorite word in prayer, and it is "Why?" Why did this
happen? Or that? Judas (another one with that name) wanted to know why
Jesus didn't just show Himself to the WHOLE WORLD!
Verse 23. "Jesus
answered and said to him, 'If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and
make Our abode with him."
People who truly want God, will find Him and "Keep (His) word". That is,
they will love God and love others. WHEREVER you are, if you love Him, He
will come to you and be a part of you. He loves you and me.
"He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and
the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me."
Jesus only said what God the Father wanted Him to say. It’s important to
follow the words of Jesus, or your love for Him is not true. And unless
you love Him, you don't love God the Father, either.
Verse 25. "These things
I have spoken to you while abiding with you."
Jesus had much to say to His disciples (students) while He lived with
them. But we shall see that Jesus has even more for those who love Him.
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father
will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all
that I said to you."
Those who love Jesus and receive Him, will be given the Holy Spirit of
God. He will teach you in a new way - inside your "heart" and He will help
you remember and understand what Jesus has said and done.
"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not
as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let
it be fearful."
Jesus gives PEACE to those who love Him. This is different from the kind
of "peace" the world thinks about. This is a peace we can have right in
the middle of problems. Yes, trouble will come, but we don't need to be
afraid anymore, because He is with us.
"You heard that I said to you, 'I go away, and I
will come to you.' If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father,
for the Father is greater than I."
When Jesus came to this earth, He became a man, a human being, and He was
telling His disciples to "Rejoice", because He was going back to God the
Father. Jesus Christ would once again simply be Who He is (God the Son),
and not be limited anymore.
Verse 29. "Now I have
told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe."
Jesus' disciples (students) did not understand very much about what was
going on, but Jesus was telling them what would occur. It would happen
just as He said, and then they would truly BELIEVE in Him for the first
Verse 30. "I will not
speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me;"
Satan (the devil) was going to be allowed to cause the death of Jesus on
the cross. The cross was a way of killing criminals but Jesus was innocent
(the enemy had nothing in Him). But Jesus would die anyway, because He
loves you and me. It was now time for Him to go.
"but so that the world may know that I love the
Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here."
It would be very hard to die for someone else, and Jesus died for us all.
It would be even harder to bear the guilt for crimes someone else did.
Jesus did all of that and more. Even though it was difficult, Jesus got up
and went to the cross for you and me.
